About this listing
Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a classic 1960's era Shure Brothers 55S model dynamic cardioid microphone based on the 55SW & PE55 of that time. The 55S series mic was introduced in 1951 and was the smaller version of the 55 "Fatboy" sold during the 1940's. The 55S was sold until the late 1970's until it evolved into the 55SH and was then discontinued. It had a long run and was one of the most successful models sold from Shure Brothers. It comes with a period Atlas DS-5 model desk stand in which to display. Pic # 2 shows this very model and all of it's basic characteristics. It should be noted right away that the mic has the original element but it's missing the impedance switch and the wiring has been damaged therefore it's non-working and this mic should be used for display, prop or repair purposes only. Due to it's nicer physical appearance it would make a great award for anybody in the music or broadcasting industry. It's a nice display piece overall. This 55S was the last of the series as Shure Brothers sold the mic with black foam inserts / pop filter around 1965. This mic came to me with what was left of the foam. It was degrading and falling apart so they were professionally replaced and the mic looks very good overall. I would rate this mic and stand a true 7 on a scale of 1 - 10 The satin chrome shows typical cosmetic wear. The mic has a very nice luster still despite the wear. Small scratches and pitting in the satin chrome finish. Just a couple small bubbles here and there. There are no fractured or bent ribs however on this mic. The Shure label shows lite wear but completely legible. Again, the original foam screens were replaced. This mic is solid...no loose parts inside or out. I take the time to secure the inner element as it's held in place with 3 shock mounts that wear out with age. The threads for the cable are excellent and the joint mechanism holds strong. The threading for the stand is perfect as well and this will screw onto any desk or floor stand you wish to use though a stand is provided. The mic also comes with the period Atlas DS-5 model mic stand as seen in pic # 3. It's just slightly nicer than the mic. It makes for a very handsome and stable platform. The stand is a painted cast iron design with the 3 inch chrome riser. You can see there is just a few scuff marks on the original ebony painted finish and it's free of any dents or fractures. The 3 original cork pads are still present and in excellent shape as well. The stand with mic is appx 11 inches tall X 6 inches wide. This will make a great conversation piece anywhere it's displayed in the home, office or studio. As with all my vintage microphones...I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid. If not...I have a no hassle return policy. The shipping will be on you as I believe that's fair but the purchase price would be refunded. Simply return in the same nice condition...period.
