The Schecter PT Special packs a lot of what we love into one value-priced T-style electric guitar: a lightweight Swamp Ash body, a satin sunburst finish, and a P-90 style neck pickup. Built with Schecter's trademark quality workmanship, the PT Special brings a little bit of country and a healthy dose of rock.A little P-90 history: Gibson introduced the P-90 in 1946, using bar magnets beneath a wide, shallow coil, and it was the original pickup on the Les Paul before the PAF humbucker arrived. It has a fatter voice than a Fender-style single coil while keeping plenty of pick attack and clarity, which makes it a great alternative to the more compressed, sometimes muddy sound of a traditional Tele neck pickup. Schecter's V-90 delivers punchy lows, clear highs, and an overall warm character that shines for both lead and rhythm work. Add some gain and it turns smooth, creamy, and vocal. If you think P-90s are only for old jazz boxes, this one will change your mind, with more soul than most humbuckers and more body than a typical single coil. The slightly scooped mids and sweet top end of the Swamp Ash body make it a great pairing.At the bridge, the Schecter VT-1 is an overwound, stacked Tele-style pickup with series/parallel switching, voiced more for modern country than classic twang. In series mode it's thick, with a strong midrange push and highs that stay in check. Pull the tone knob for parallel mode and it leans out for rhythm work, blending nicely with the neck pickup for jangly, open tones. Make no mistake though, this is more "Rocker Tele" than chicken-pickin' machine.The nicely finished, tinted satin maple neck has a slightly chunkier profile than most of the PT line. Schecter calls it a "C" profile, while most PT models use their "Thin C." It runs roughly .035" deeper from the 1st to the 12th fret, enough to feel but nothing dramatic. A bit more neck mass generally helps low-end response, and unless you're an all-out shredder, it's a comfortable fit for both chords and single-note work. The modern 12" radius and jumbo frets make bends easy and give it a contemporary feel.The Schecter PT Special brings a modern rock attitude to Leo Fender's famous T-style shape without losing the classic look that made it an icon.
