One of the most distinctive models from Rickenbacker's discontinued C Series, this 2009 4001C64S was created to recreate Paul McCartney's famous 1964 Rickenbacker 4001S as it appeared after years of use and modification. Unlike the standard 4001C64, the C64S incorporates several intentionally unusual details based on McCartney's historic instrument. Most immediately recognizable is its reversed headstock orientation. The body contours were also reshaped to reflect modifications made to the original bass, while the stripped-back Mapleglo appearance recalls the natural finish revealed after McCartney's original Fireglo finish was removed in the late 1960s. The bass retains the essential early-Rickenbacker formula with neck-through construction, an unbound body and fingerboard, dot inlays, vintage-style hardware, a toaster-style neck pickup, and the distinctive horseshoe-style bridge pickup assembly. These details make the 4001C64S much more than simply another vintage-styled 4001. It represents Rickenbacker's factory interpretation of one of the most historically significant individual bass guitars ever made, reproduced in the configuration familiar from McCartney's later Beatles and Wings-era use.
