MXR® SLASH SIGNATURE TALK BOXHowl with the bold, expressive voice of rock ’n’ roll’s top-hatted icon with the MXR Slash Signature Talk Box. This latest joint effort between Dunlop and Slash joins a line of picks, pedals, and more developed over 30+ years of close collaboration. Based on the classic Heil Talk Box, this model has been hot rodded to highlight Slash’s sweet, smoky blues-influenced licks. First, the MXR design team upgraded the loudspeaker with one personally selected by Slash. It offers greater volume and a fatter bottom end so that he can rip and roar with power and presence. Next, we upgraded the tube adapter with a conical interior for even better airflow. Finally, we’ve streamlined the housing for a sleeker, more modern look and draped it in Slash’s customary candy apple red finish. The result is a talk box that offers a clearer sound, better articulation, and a much wider range of expression. Don’t just play it—say it. Get the MXR Slash Signature Talk Box. “I’ve had a talk box since I was 16. First time I heard it was Frampton’s ‘Do You Feel Like We Do,’ then Jeff Beck’s ‘She’s a Woman,’ and Aerosmith’s live ‘Walk This Way.’ To me, it’s right up there with the Cry Baby® Wah: a classic effect that transforms your guitar into an extension of your own voice.”—SlashEach pedal includes a numbered card that is hand signed by Slash. POWERThe MXR® Slash Signature Talk Box is powered by your amplifier and is rated for an 8 ohm load at 100 watts RMS. Before connecting, check your amp head’s output specifications to be sure they fall within these limits. Exceeding them can damage the unit.PLAYING TECHNIQUE1. Vowels: Place the tube in the corner of your mouth, between your back teeth. Without using your voice, mouth vowel sounds—A, E, I, O, U—while you play. Exaggerating the shape of your mouth produces the best results.2. Consonants: Once you’re comfortable with vowels, move on to consonants: B, D, G, J, K, P, Q, T. Sounds like F, K, P, and T need breath to distinguish them from V, G, B, and D, so exaggeration matters here too.3. Try placing another effect—like a Phase 90—before the Talk Box in your signal chain for expanded sonic possibilities.SIGNAL CHAIN SETUPWhat You’ll Need1. Amp head with a speaker output.2. Microphone connected to a PA system (amp and speaker).3. 8 ohm speaker or speaker cabinet.4. Two heavy-duty speaker cables (not standard instrument cables).SETUP1. Set up your pre-amp effects. Run your guitar through any effects you want in front of the Talk Box. Send the last effect in the chain into your amp head’s input. If you’re not running any other effects, just plug your guitar straight into your amp.2. Connect your amp head to the Talk Box. Run a heavy-duty speaker cable from your amp head’s speaker output to the Talk Box’s FROM AMP jack. Reminder: Mismatched impedance or excess power can cause damage. Check your amp against the impedance and wattage requirements stated in the Power section.3. Connect your speaker cabinet. Run another heavy- duty speaker cable from the Talk Box’s TO SPEAKER jack to your 8 ohm speaker or cabinet. With the Talk Box on, your signal routes through the tube. Switched off, your signal passes through unaltered. See Diagram B for full signal chain layout.4. Attach the tube. Clean the tube before use and let it dry completely. Insert one end into the Talk Box’s TUBE ADAPTER input. Attach the other end to your microphone stand using the included mic stand clip, positioning it so it reaches your mouth comfortably.5. Position the tube. Set up your mic and PA the way you normally would, with the tube end close to the microphone for best results. See Diagram A.6. Play. Engage the footswitch to activate the Talk Box, then start playing. Reminder: the WARNING LIGHT is for the speaker’s protection. It does not indicate the effect is on. If the light remains on or gets bright when playing, reduce the output of your amplifier to the Talk Box.
