About this listing
With a unique mash-up of Fullerton-meets-Kalamazoo pickups, body shape, and scale length, the Godin Radium packs a wide range of tones into a comfortable, easy-to-play package. Introduced at NAMM 2020, the Radium is Godin's take on the single-cut electric guitar, combining ideas from the company's Radiator and Stadium models (fittingly, the name blends the two) with a versatile HSH pickup layout. It is not likely to be mistaken for anything else, it sounds every bit as unique as it looks, and it is an excellent value.
This is a Godin “SF” Factory Second guitar with a small cosmetic defect; please see the photos. These defects are typically trivial, and you still get a new guitar with a full factory warranty at a nice savings.

Looking a bit like a Fender-Gibson love child, the Godin Radium blends familiar ideas into a surprisingly broad range of tones. The mahogany neck, covered humbuckers, and mahogany center section give the Winchester Brown a warm, mid-focused voice, much like a classic set-neck humbucker guitar. But that is where the similarities start to trail off. The humbuckers are mounted directly to the body, and the Cajun middle pickup, voiced a little lower in output, balances nicely with the neck and bridge pickups.
Selecting the neck or bridge pickup on its own gives you much of what you would expect from those positions. The neck pickup has warmth that does not mask the high end, with a pleasant midrange push that adds some gravitas without getting muddy. The bridge pickup does not have the bite of an open-coil humbucker, but we loved it through our JAM Pedals Tubedreamer: plenty of crunch and harmonics, with a smooth, refined top end and no metallic edge. It is the kind of sound you can play all night without tiring of it.
Putting a Tele-style single-coil in the middle position adds a smooth rhythm voice with enough sparkle to stay present in the mix. Combined with the neck or bridge pickup, you do not get the hollow, quacky in-between tones of a Strat. The effect is cleaner and more distinct. That might disappoint some players, but it works beautifully with vibe, chorus, and phaser effects to create lush, detailed chords that shimmer when the notes are picked individually. Even with plenty of modulation piled on, the fundamental tone stays intact.
Something interesting happens when you pull up the tone knob to split both humbuckers: some of that quack comes back when they are combined with the middle pickup. This gets you closer to a Strat-style sound, with a little less snap than the real thing. Of course, the point is not to sound like that guitar, and pulling the tone knob feels more like getting a second guitar to work with.
The Godin Radium radiates uniqueness, and if you are looking for a versatile, Canadian-made single-cut electric guitar that stands apart from the crowd, we highly recommend it.
