Overview
The Gibson SG went through a rather major redesign in 1972, moving away from the vibrola tailpiece that had been with the model since the beginning and replacing it with a new "wide-travel" version of the Tune-O-Matic bridge (Bigsby vibratos were a factory option), going back to the "Small Guard" looks of the first run, and adding the infamous volute at the rear of the headstock which was supposed to decrease the likeliness of headstock breaks.
