The Disting is a 16-in-1 multifunction module, offering a variety of CV and audio processes, including a selection of oscillators (LFOs/VCOs). All algorithms have two high-precision inputs and outputs, and a third control input, exposed on a front panel knob and a CV input.
The disting mk3 was introduced in November 2015. The main differences compared to the original version are the sizing, power and functionality. It is now only 43mm deep (originally 53mm) with over 50% less power consumption - now at 70mA combined draw (originally 148mA). The disting is now reprogrammable with user-updatable code via Micro SD card, and it is no longer limited to 16 functions. A new encoder and push button gives more menu controlling options.
From firmware v3.3 onwards, if the disting detects a MicroSD card in its slot at power-up, another bank of algorithms becomes available which use the SD card for audio sample or MIDI file playback.
This algorithm continuously plays audio files, in a manner very much inspired by Tom Whitwell's Radio Music module. The current audio file is selected with the Z knob/CV. It plays, forever, at its natural speed (see the algorithms below if you want to control the speed), looping when it gets to the end; or it plays until the end of the file and stops, depending on the 'loop' setting. X is a retrigger input. A trigger pulse in excess of 1V will reset the playback position. The initial playback position is set by the Y input. The voltage range 0-8V corresponds to the length of the file so e.g. 0V input (or no input) sets the initial position to the start of the file, 4V input sets the initial position to halfway through the file, etc. When switching between files, the playback position is maintained, modulo the length of the new file.
The Disting mk4 was introduced at NAMM 2017 and includes even more updates! Now with a dot-matrix screen, allowing the menu navigation and parameter selection to be operated with ease. The MicroUSB slot has also been moved to the front, for easy access of audio samples. There are even more functions the Disting can perform, including an internal tuner, as well as pitch and frequency references.
