Even among synth-making luminaries, Dave Smith has always stood out—first with Sequential Circuits, then with his namesake, Dave Smith Instruments. His restless innovation finds its way into the DSI Prophet Rev2, a spiritual successor to the Sequential Circuits Prophet (1978-1984), as well as to the Prophet ‘08. This 16-voice polysynth features the 2/4 pole, low-pass, resonant Curtis filters per voice found on many classic analog synths from the ‘70s, and it allows players to allocate the voices pretty much as they wish. Want to split the keyboard into zones? Want to stack voices? Do it. What’s more, players can alter the four waveshapes (sawtooth, triangle, square, saw+triangle) with pulsewidth modulation and add effects like reverb, delays (standard and BBD), chorus, phase shifter, ring modulation, and distortion. These are just a few features that make the Prophet Rev2’s sound design possibilities nearly endless.
