Novation Launchpad X: Expressive Grid Control for Ableton Live
The Novation Launchpad X is an 8x8 grid controller that pairs 64 velocity-sensitive pads with fast, deep Ableton Live integration. Polyphonic aftertouch, a Note mode with Scale and Chord tools, and a 3.5mm TRS MIDI output make it as much an instrument as a clip launcher. Connected and powered by a single USB-C cable, it delivers expressive performance control the moment you plug in. For the Ableton producer who wants pads that feel alive without stepping up to the standalone Pro, the Launchpad X is the sweet spot.
64 Velocity Pads With Polyphonic Aftertouch
The Launchpad X upgrades the grid with 64 velocity-sensitive RGB pads that also read polyphonic aftertouch, so both the force of your hit and the pressure you hold register. Poly aftertouch works per pad, letting you add movement to a single note inside a chord or drum pattern without affecting the rest. This expressive response is the key difference from the fixed-velocity Launchpad Mini, turning the grid into a playable instrument. For finger-drummers, the pad feel makes rhythmic performance genuinely dynamic.
Fast Session Mode and Musical Note Mode
Session mode maps the grid directly to the Ableton Live Session view, so pads launch clips and scenes with color feedback that tracks your project. Note mode transforms the same grid into a melodic instrument, with Scale and Chord tools that keep every pad in key so wrong notes are hard to play. Switching between launching and playing is instant, keeping performances fluid. This combination covers both the arrange-and-trigger and the play-and-record sides of production.
3.5mm TRS MIDI Out for External Gear
A 3.5mm TRS MIDI output lets the Launchpad X control external synths, drum machines, and sequencers directly, extending it beyond the computer. That means the same grid you use for Ableton can play or trigger hardware in a hybrid setup. The compact TRS connector keeps the unit portable while still bridging to a DIN-based MIDI rig with a standard adapter. For producers blending software and hardware, that output adds real flexibility.
Custom Modes and USB-C Bus Power
Custom Modes, built in the free Novation Components editor, let you design your own pad layouts to control any MIDI-capable software or plugin, and they save to the hardware. The Launchpad X connects and draws all its power from a single class-compliant USB-C cable, so setup is as simple as plugging in. Its light, slim body drops easily into a bag for a gig or a mobile session. This plug-and-play simplicity keeps the focus on performing, not configuring.
Deep Ableton Integration and Who It Is For
Designed hand-in-hand with Ableton Live, the Launchpad X gives clip launching, mixing shortcuts, and instrument play from one grid, making it a natural centerpiece for a Live rig. It suits the electronic producer, the beat-maker who finger-drums, and the performer who wants expressive pads without the standalone sequencer of the Pro. Sitting between the compact Mini and the flagship Pro, it balances expressiveness and simplicity. It ships with Ableton Live Lite and the Novation software suite to start immediately.
