Only 200 of these were made. With the stratocaster style body the guitar resembles the Jackson's, Charvel's, and Washburne's of that era, but is a true and tried Gibson. It was recently serviced at Senator Guitar here in Spokane. It has a locking Floyd Rose with whammy bar. Light wood, the body has the weight consistency of an SG rather than the beef of a Les Paul. It has some seriously hefty tone behind it, which you'd expect no less from any Gibson. There is some crazing going on with the finish, but that just shows that this guitar has been played. All guitars are meant to be played. With the Original Bill Lawrence pickups, it has some amazing tone and definitive crunch when over driven.
GIBSON manufactured the U-2 between 1987 and 1994. Along with the US-1 the U-2 was Gibson's response to the booming popularity of superstrats in the 1980s. In 1987 Gibson offered a limited edition of this model called the Showcase Edition U2, 200 were made in total. The U-2's pickups are selected using the three mini switches under the volume control knob (a push pull control which acts as a coil split for the humbucker when pressed) , the first one being used for the neck pickup the middle switch for the middle on and the third switch for the Humbucker. The fourth switch, a little bit separated from the rest is a bypass/blower switch for "bridge only" versus the three individual pickup selector switches.
Despite the crazing, which rarely turns off aficionados, this guitar is beautiful and sounds amazing. It would be a great addition as a regular player, or to someone's expanding collection.
Comes with Leatherbound, pink fuzzy interior, very protective, hard case. The case is worth a few hundred on it's own.
