Give the right instruments to a genius, and you will achieve unprecedented results. This phrase encapsulates what Tom Murphy and the Gibson Custom Shop have managed to create with the new Murphy Lab project.
The new Gibson management has indeed decided to involve Tom Murphy directly within the Gibson Custom Shop once again to create a new generation of aging techniques that are even more accurate and realistic than before: a decisive break from previous manufacturing techniques and a sensational leap forward in terms of quality results.
The Murphy Lab perfectly recreates, using natural processes rather than manual ones, the same aging conditions of the finish that we find on original vintage instruments. The finishes are incredibly thin, characterized by a clear and consistent "crackle," providing an absolutely authentic feel. It truly feels like holding a vintage original instrument, but with all the quality and performance that only the Gibson Custom Shop can offer today.
From a technical standpoint, we are discussing instruments that represent the highest level ever achieved by the Gibson Custom Shop in terms of accuracy and quality: they encompass all the technical innovations—such as "period-correct" capacitors and the finally "unpotted" Custom Buckers—along with the wealth of experience and quality generated by the recent True Historic series, which has allowed the Gibson Custom Shop's production to make a sensational leap forward.
In particular, this specimen is part of a limited series of instruments produced by the Gibson Custom Shop, the Limited Edition Collection, featuring a combination of aesthetic characteristics that evoke the most legendary instruments in Gibson's history: specifically, this one replicates the instrument depicted on page 151 of the book Beauty of the Burst.
