The Black Lion Audio Revolution 14x16 is a 14-in, 16-out USB-C audio interface, running conversion at up to 24-bit/192kHz in a single rack space. It packs four mic preamps, deep analog and digital I/O, three headphone amps, and a patented word clock into one 1U chassis. Built on Black Lion's years of modifying and clocking other companies' interfaces, it is designed to be the command center of a modern recording room. Everything from tracking a full band to monitoring a final mix can run through this one unit.
Auteur Preamps Bring Console CharacterChannels 1 and 2 feature Auteur preamps, a design previously reserved for Black Lion's standalone preamp hardware. A preamp is the first gain stage a microphone signal hits, and its voicing shapes the entire recording. At lower gain the Auteur delivers the fast, punchy attack associated with American consoles, ideal for drums and rhythm guitar; push the gain and it takes on the warmth and color of classic British desks that flatter vocals and bass. Because the circuit is transformer-coupled, it adds gentle harmonic weight and saturation as you drive it harder.
Four Preamps and Flexible Analog InputsBeyond the two Auteur channels, channels 3 and 4 use Black Lion's Revolution preamps for clean, transparent gain. Channels 1 and 2 can be reached from either the front or the rear panel, so permanent studio ties stay wired while you still plug in on the fly. Combo inputs accept microphones, line-level sources, and high-impedance instruments such as guitar and bass. That range lets one interface capture a vocalist, a synth, and a direct guitar without extra hardware.
Integrate Outboard Gear with Insert/ReturnsFour switchable insert/returns let you patch external hardware processors, such as compressors and equalizers, directly into the signal chain. A single button A/Bs the processed and unprocessed signal so you can hear exactly what a piece of gear is doing. The Return jacks double as line inputs, feeding keyboards, synths, and other line-level devices when no outboard is patched. The unit can even work as a standalone mic preamp with no computer attached.
Expand Your I/O Over ADATADAT is an optical format that carries several channels of digital audio down one light-pipe cable. The Revolution 14x16 adds eight more inputs and eight more outputs over ADAT, growing the system as sessions demand. Pairing it with a dedicated eight-channel converter turns a compact rig into a large-format tracking front end. This headroom means the interface scales with a project instead of capping it.
Versatile Monitoring and Eight-Stage MeteringThree loud, low-noise headphone amps let a whole tracking room monitor at once without bleeding into open microphones. The Mix Edit feature assembles a dedicated low-latency headphone mix from both hardware inputs and software playback, so performers hear exactly what they need. Bright eight-stage meters can display channel input levels, output levels, or the levels of the rear-panel inserts. Both the main monitor and headphone outputs are mono-summable for quick mono-compatibility checks.
Patented Macro-MMC ClockingJitter is a tiny timing error in the digital clock that smears stereo detail and dulls transients. Macro-MMC is Black Lion's patented clocking technology, refined across its dedicated word clocks and interface modifications, and it holds sync tight to keep conversion clean. Any hardware connected over the BNC connections benefits from that low-jitter timing for maximum sync. If you already own a clock you trust, the Revolution 14x16 will graciously accept clock in and follow it instead.
Modded Out of the BoxBlack Lion describes the Revolution 14x16 as modded out of the box, applying the boutique techniques it once added by hand. PG-i filtering and highly filtered power rails work with full-circuit power decoupling to keep noise out of the audio. Over two dozen hard-to-source boutique capacitors and precision film resistors line the signal path, and all analog I/O is fully balanced right to the core of the converter. Internal gain-staging is optimized for the best possible signal-to-noise ratio.
Where the Revolution 14x16 FitsThis interface suits project and commercial studios that track full bands and need deep, expandable I/O in one rack space. Producers reach for its Auteur channels when they want color, its inserts for outboard processing, and its three headphone mixes for comfortable overdub sessions. A rear-panel DC supply powers the unit, and a class-compliant USB-C connection links it to both Mac and Windows systems. A bundled software suite rounds out the package so a new owner can record from day one.
