1971 Fender Mustang - Competition Orange

Up for sale is a beautiful 1971 Fender Mustang in Competition Orange, arguably the rarest and, in my opinion, the most stunning custom color offered on these guitars. Only a few hundred were produced in this finish, making it one of the hardest Mustangs to find today.

This guitar has aged beautifully and shows honest signs of decades of playing. It has plenty of tasteful wear and character, the kind that only comes from being genuinely loved and played rather than artificially relic’d.

Over the years, the front of the body has seen a lot of sunlight, causing the red pigment in the original Competition Orange finish to fade. As a result, the front has taken on a unique hue that is remarkably close to Graffiti Yellow, while the back has retained much more of its original orange color. The contrast gives the guitar an incredible vintage look.

The face of the headstock has darkened beautifully with age, and the original pickguard has developed a rich natural yellow patina that perfectly complements the faded finish.

The tone is truly captivating. From warm, twangy surf tones in the neck position to biting punk and grunge sounds from the bridge pickup, this Mustang is remarkably versatile. It simply has a wonderfully honest sound.

The pots and the bridge saddles have been replaced. Aside from these changes, the guitar retains its unmistakable vintage character and is a fantastic example of one of Fender’s rarest custom colors.

A wonderfully aged, great playing vintage Mustang with a look that simply cannot be reproduced.

The guitar comes with a period correct leather soft case.
