Gibson / 1963 J-50 ADJ
- A great instrument born in a year that changed music forever
By the mid-to-late 1960s, Gibson made major spec changes aimed at players switching over from electric guitars.
Thick Regular Neck: with a nut width of about 43.5mm, the thick, rounded neck shape is comfortably substantial and very playable.
Adjustable Bridge: an innovative design that lets you adjust the action instantly via two side screws. Unlike a wooden saddle, the ceramic saddle produces a hard, percussive attack.
Final Year of the Thin Pickguard: this example uses the thin, tortoiseshell-pattern large pickguard, which was changed the following year to a thicker, redder pickguard. This is one of the last examples before that spec change.
In the late 1960s, as bands and larger amps became more common, acoustic guitars needed "fast attack that cuts through a mix." This 1967 J-50's tone is exactly that answer - a crisp, bright overtone the instant you strike a chord, and a dry midrange from a well-aged mahogany body. A single strum instantly evokes the sound of the acoustic rock and folk of that era.
