AKAI GX-636 4-Track Auto-Reverse Stereo Tape Deck — 6 GX Heads, 3-Motor Direct Capstan Drive — Serviced — LED Meter Upgrade
This Unit
Professionally serviced and tested with basic preventive maintenance: new belt, lubrication, and alignment. All functions tested and passed, and the unit is expected to perform as designed for long-term use. This unit has also received an LED upgrade to the VU meter illumination, replacing the original incandescent bulbs — brighter, cooler-running, and effectively permanent going forward.
Cosmetically the deck presents very well. There are light surface scratches, most notably one longer scratch across the upper-center of the faceplate, visible under certain lighting conditions but not visible once a pair of 10.5" reels is mounted. All flaws are clearly documented in the photos — please review them closely, as they're part of the listing. Aside from the noted scratches, the faceplate, meters, reel hubs, and controls all present cleanly. Multi-voltage design (110/120/220/240V), currently configured for US current.
About the GX-636
Produced in the early 1980s as one of the last and most feature-rich machines in Akai's celebrated GX line, the GX-636 is regarded by many enthusiasts as a match — and by some, a favorite — over even the flagship GX-747.
Akai's legendary GX (Glass & Crystal Ferrite) heads in a 6-head configuration — one record and one playback GX head per direction, plus two erase heads — arranged with perfect symmetry to enable full auto-reverse recording and playback both ways. The GX heads are prized for their exceptional wear resistance and stable, accurate tape contact.
Three-motor direct-capstan-drive transport — one AC servo motor driving the capstan directly, plus two eddy-current outer-rotor motors for the supply and take-up reels — for smooth, stable tape handling with negligible wow and flutter.
Feather-touch logic control for the transport, with both-way (bi-directional) recording, real-time counter, pitch control, REC mute with timing, timer-start standby, dual VU meters with over-modulation indicators, independent mic and line inputs, and switchable tape/monitor settings. The 4-track quarter-track format ensures broad compatibility with prerecorded and consumer quarter-track tapes.
The GX-636 handles up to 10.5-inch reels and presents in its wood-sided case with the classic Akai silver faceplate.
