I bought a VL2 from Sweetwater and there seemed to be a lot of issues. They exchanged it for new one from a new batch they had just gotten in and this one is perfect. I have updated the firmware to the latest version. It is quite a fantastic machine. The people who designed this thought of everything, how to get the maximum functionality from every part of it. There’s a very useful little mixer just for the Function Generator section. I appreciate that Ring Mod had its own dedicated output that is already hardwired and always available. There are great tutorials on YouTube that when taken slowly introduce you to the depths this machine is capable of that just reading the manual will not get you. There is so much packed in here.
It comes with a bunch of cables and a little midi adapter. Power supply, of course. I will include the manual which I had printed out. I would strongly recommend getting at least a few “mult” cables because you will always want to send some signals to several places. And having one or two passive attenuators comes in very handy as well. I was thinking of adding a separate box with a few old school modules like a dedicated envelope generator, a filter, and a mixer(besides the function generator mixer another small limited mixer/splitter is already included in the VL2). The on board oscillators themselves are worth the price of admission. Unbelievable variety of tones and controllability.
It took me awhile to get my head around the sequencer section. It does a LOT which means it requires a lot of brain power and patience to really take advantage of all it is capable of. I have only explored a fraction of what it can do. The online forum was incredibly helpful with getting me past my initial troubles understanding it.
I have had many great experimental sessions with it but I found it is not the machine I immediately go to, especially in the last couple of months. I have to face the fact that I really need patch memory for most of what I do. I’m either going to have to do digital or save up for a modern Buchla with patch memory. Although, having a sampler would be great.
