C. F. Martin Cowboy III Auditorium Limited Edition #251/750 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2001), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 854095, printed graphic finish, HPL body, Stratabond neck, Micarta fingerboard and bridge., original black hard shell case.

This Martin Cowboy III Auditorium flat-top was part of Martin's line about 25 years ago, a limited edition of 750 units worldwide. The OM-styled instrument is totally built from non-traditional materials, something Martin has put some effort into exploring in the 21st Century. The body is made of "HPL" (High Pressure Laminate) which is another term for the Phenolic composite better known as Formica. The neck is made of another Phenolic compound called Stratabond, with Micarta used for the nut, fingerboard and bridge. These materials are touted as more stable than wood, and less prone to problems with temperature and humidity.

Martin has released several series of these decorated models, this 2001 guitar is number 251/750 in the "Cowboy III" limited edition. The top features unique whimsical western-themed artwork Robert Armstrong, well known for his musical endeavors (sometimes with Robert Crumb) as well as his stellar cartoon work. It depicts a crooning cowboy playing (what else?) a Martin OM while his gal and a mustachioed pal look on in apparent appreciation. In the background a bronco bucks and several other cowpokes look on, with a western mountain vista unfolding behind.

25 years along this Phenolic instrument has held together nicely and even if it doesn't improve with age the way a wooden guitar time does seems to have mellowed its sound a bit! This one has been set up as a performing guitar with a pickup and strap button added. The guitar plays well and if not to every Martin lover's taste represents an interesting, slightly tongue-in-cheek detour for America's most renowned guitar maker.

Overall length is 39 7/8 in. (101.3 cm.), 15 in. (38.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

This guitar appears not much played, and unaltered except to for added K&K pickup and a strap button to the side of the heel. It plays very well and offers a surprisingly decent sound for a completely synthetic instrument. While many folks would see this as a novelty Martin put some effort into it to make a fully playable guitar under the artwork. It resides in the original HSC. Excellent Condition.
