JMP 2203 Master Model Lead – 1977
Original Factory Red Tolex • Original Drake Transformers - Fully Serviced with New Valves
A particularly rare and eye-catching 1977 Marshall JMP 2203 Master Model Lead finished in its original factory red tolex.
The 2203 was Marshall’s first Master Volume design and would go on to become one of the most influential amplifiers ever produced. Combining the power and authority of a Super Lead with a dedicated master volume control, the 2203 became the sound of late-’70s hard rock and laid the foundations for the legendary JCM800 series that followed.
Whilst original 1970s 2203s are increasingly difficult to find, genuine factory red examples are exceptionally scarce. This amplifier retains its original red covering, original Drake transformers and even its original Rockbottom Music dealer sticker from West Croydon, giving it a wonderful period-correct appearance and provenance.

Tone
Everything you could want from a great late-’70s Marshall.
The sound is tighter and more focused than the earlier non-master volume amplifiers, with a punchy low end, aggressive upper midrange and the unmistakable roar that helped define arena rock and early heavy metal.
The High Sensitivity input delivers the classic 2203 experience — thick harmonic overdrive, articulate pick attack and endless sustain when pushed. The Low input offers a cleaner, more dynamic platform that pairs exceptionally well with pedals.
From AC/DC-style crunch through to the early sounds of Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker and countless NWOBHM bands, the 2203 remains one of the most versatile and usable vintage Marshalls ever built.
Condition
A superb vintage example that presents beautifully. The original factory red tolex immediately sets this amplifier apart from the vast majority of surviving JMPs and gives it tremendous visual presence.
The original Drake transformers remain in place and the amp retains its original Rockbottom Music dealer sticker, adding to its authenticity and charm.
