1980 Greco EG-700 Gold Top “Super Sound Model” – Made in Japan

Up for sale is a 1980 Greco EG-700 Gold Top “Super Sound Model,” made in Japan.

This is a vintage Japanese single-cut model from Greco’s highly regarded late-1970s to early-1980s era. The serial number is “0 9097,” and the back of the headstock has the original “EG 700 / Greco Guitar” model sticker.

This guitar is equipped with Greco / Maxon PU-2 humbuckers. Both pickups are PU-2 models, and the pickup baseplates show the “PU-2” stamp. These are desirable PAF-style pickups used on higher-grade Greco models of this period, and they are a very nice feature on this vintage EG-700.

The guitar has a beautiful Gold Top finish, a natural mahogany-style back and neck, cream binding, block fingerboard inlays, and the classic Les Paul-style control layout. It has the look, feel, and sound that make vintage Japanese Greco guitars so attractive.

The sound is warm, open, and articulate. The neck pickup has a smooth and full tone, while the bridge pickup has a clear, strong, and lively character. It is a very enjoyable player’s guitar with a classic vintage Japanese tone.

It is not a mint collector-grade piece, but it has the honest wear, character, and tone of a well-played vintage Greco. The PU-2 pickups are a strong point of this guitar and make it especially appealing as a player’s vintage Japanese Les Paul-style model.
