Built by Retrovox Vintage Audio, this custom passive guitar extension cabinet pairs an original 1961 Watterson High Fidelity speaker enclosure with an original 1971 Hokutone 8-inch full-range driver.
Originally manufactured by Watterson Radio Manufacturing Company of Dallas, Texas, the cabinet preserves its beautiful Mid-Century Modern styling with its walnut cabinet, original woven grille cloth, tapered legs with metal caps, and furniture-quality construction. The original front badge has been cleanly removed for a minimalist appearance.
Rather than drilling new holes, the modern 1/4-inch speaker jack was installed using the cabinet's existing rear control opening, minimizing permanent modifications while making the cabinet fully compatible with modern guitar amplifiers.
The original 1971 Hokutone paper-cone driver delivers a warm, balanced vintage voice with rich lower mids, smooth highs, excellent touch sensitivity, and natural speaker compression. The generous internal volume of the Watterson enclosure allows the speaker to develop noticeably greater depth and fullness than a typical compact practice cabinet while retaining focused mids and excellent articulation.
This combination works exceptionally well with low-watt tube amplifiers, micro heads, fuzz pedals, overdrive, harmonica, recording, blues, garage rock, surf, indie, classic rock, ambient textures, and vintage-inspired clean or edge-of-breakup tones.
