I was able to talk with Richard Weikum about this instrument. Mr. Weikum worked side by side with Stephen Davies on these first necks that became the famous N4 guitars. He looked over the same pictures here and determined this is a one of a kind, pre production guitar made in Japan with a made in Chicago neck. This guitar was built by master builder Hatori-San at the Gakki factory in Japan. The markings in the neck pickup route are his name. The “WB” signifies that it was an official factory commissioned build for Washburn. Along with the one of a kind, 24 fret Pat. Pending Stephen’s Ext. Cutaway neck this guitar has other completely unique features not seen on any other N4 guitars ( a Fender style 5 way pickup selector, a different shape reverse headstock, a tone control & Washburn pickups). The Washburn licensed Floyd is not uncommon w/ a Japanese N4 however. It also has Washburn stamped tuners; where most N4’s have mini Grovers. The pencil marking on the neck “EC 22” with a 24 fret neck is what makes this a concept design, prototype instrument. I have been playing the hell out of this guitar since I bought it. It is so much fun to play. The trem is set up great. It holds a tune perfectly. The frets have tons of life left. I have considered tracking down a Bill Lawrence and Duncan pickup and Floyd Rose. But I’ve decided that the uniqueness of this instrument should remain in its original state. There is a shim on the treble side of the neck route. I tried removing it, but the string height is pretty high w/out it on the treble side. Other than that, I believe this guitar is exactly as it came out of the Gakki factory in May of 1990. Nuno is my favorite living hard rock guitar player. His popularity is at an all time high. Here is a chance to own a one of kind/prototype N4.
