The 1979 Peavey T-40 Bass is a legendary, American-made vintage instrument renowned for its advanced electronic engineering, indestructible "built-like-a-tank" build quality, and notorious heavyweight design. Introduced in 1978 and manufactured until 1987 in Meridian, Mississippi, the T-40 was Peaveyās very first production bass guitar. The 1979 model belongs to the highly sought-after "first generation" era of this instrument
Manufacturing and Design History
Designed by Chip Todd alongside company founder Hartley Peavey, the T-40 made history by pioneering the use of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines in American guitar manufacturing. Instead of cutting bodies entirely by hand, Peavey used automated routers to ensure exact specifications and reduce production costs, completely revolutionizing how modern guitars are mass-produced. [1, 2, 3]The 1979 version typically features a solid northern ash or southern swamp ash body, a bolt-on maple neck, a heavy high-mass chrome bridge, and a string-through-body design.
Innovative Electronics
What sets the 1979 T-40 apart from its contemporaries is its proprietary, passive circuitry that allows incredible tonal versatility without needing a battery.
- Toaster Pickups: The 1979 model features the early "Toaster" style humbucker pickups (distinguishable by two clean metal strips without the center blade found on mid-80s models).
- Tone Control Coil Switching: The tone knobs act as a clever coil splitter. Rolling the tone knob from 7 to 10 automatically splits the humbucker into a bright, punchy single-coil. Rolling it below 7 transitions the circuit into a thick, hum-canceling dual-coil humbucker.
- Phase Switch: In addition to a standard 3-way pickup selector toggle, it features a small 2-way phase switch. When both pickups are selected, flipping this switch puts them out of phase, creating a distinctively hollow, funky, and scooped tone.
