1929 Holton Revelation Llewellyn model professional trumpet that plays fantastic! The valves and casings have been rebuilt at some time in the past and not much wear has occurred since! The casings were bored oversize and the valves built up with hard nickel. Compression is excellent. This horn is very tight, efficient and the sound is incredible!
It has the easiest, purest upper register that I have ever encountered, and I have enjoyed many incredible players. My normal range ends at D above the staff and that only during the first half hour or so of practice or a show. I have regularly hit and clearly held Es after 90+ minutes of hard practice on this horn! Intonation is excellent from pedal tones on up. Efficiency is off the hook! From a soft purr up through a full-throated roar when pushed, this is a very, very special instrument. It far exceeds my needs and abilities, so I am passing it along for another player to enjoy.
This horn had a bad bell crumple and spotty, bad lacquer when I obtained it. I had the horn straightened and the horn gone over in general at an excellent local shop. I chem stripped, fully disassembled, cleaned and hand polished it, then reassembled it with all new consumables. Valve springs, water valve cork, and all valve corks and washers (“felts”) were replaced using Opti-corks and premium Valentino quiet washers. At the same time, the valve ports were vertically aligned to precisely match the horn ports.
There are issues that need to be discussed. The bell shows significant evidence of being repaired / rolled out. There is spotty pitting and some surface corrosion left over from spotty lacquer and 97 years of existence. I hand polish so I do not remove such imperfections. There is a brass patch on the entire third slide crook. There are two spots of red rot starting on the leadpipe near the finger hook. These two are visible from the inside of the pipe as well, and may rot through at some point, requiring a brass patch (or a Blackburn pipe?).
Also, the third valve body is soldered together such that it is marginally misaligned laterally (sideways). I debated having it resoldered to realign it correctly but after long discussion with my horn shop, opted to leave it because it is likely intentional and the source of the easy high register. It is not a difficult or expensive job for a competent shop to perform if the next owner desires. The effects would be to warm and broaden the sound and decrease resistance somewhat, likely affecting the easy high register.
Includes likely original case, no mouthpiece or other accessories. Pictures show details and supersede any written description. Please ask any detailed questions!
