This bassoon features a genuine Heckel wing joint, likely originating from a modified 6000-series instrument. The remaining joints are believed with high probability to be Hüller, though no maker’s markings or serial numbers have been located to definitively confirm this.

The instrument was appears to have been cosmetically refinished so the remaining joints closely match the Heckel wing joint, resulting in a uniform appearance. (Not recent)

Heckel Components

    •   Genuine Heckel wing joint, likely from a modified 6000-series bassoon

    •   High D vent and High E keys professionally added to the wing joint

    •   Wing joint: Silver finger tubes were installed into grafted maple wood inserts.

    •   Older postwar Heckel CC2 bocal in unplated German nickel silver

Seller's Personal Note:

My Dad passed in January 2026 and this was his bassoon. I was born in 1969 and that's when he ordered it. We do not have the full story about why the only verifiable Heckel remaining section of the horn is the Tenor wing. He called it a Heckel-stein (play on Frankenstein) for years while we boys were in our teens. Through orchestral connections at my church, I put this instrument in the hands of a professional bassoon repairman in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. This individual also plays in the PSO from time to time. His profession is literally repairing and working on and maintaining bassoons and playing them. Although I grew up in a musical household, I know very little about the specifics of bassoons. The professional believes that all sections other than the tenor wing are Hüller in origin. He assembled the instrument and played it in front of me, and none of these remarks about its playability are from anything other than my specific eyewitness and his feedback.

Instrument Condition

The bassoon is fully playable and suitable for semi-professional performance, community ensembles, pit orchestra work, or as a capable backup instrument.

Mechanically, the instrument would benefit from a complete overhaul. The keywork functions throughout but will need to be regulated by a bassoon repair specialist.

The instrument has potential for someone looking to invest a vintage German bassoon but will require a professional mechanical restoration.

The U-tube has undergone previous servicing and has been sealed. The nature and date of this work are unknown, but it is currently functional.

No serial numbers have been found on the instrument.

Included

    •    Older Heckel CC2 post-war unplated German nickel silver bocal

    •    Original Heckel hard case in solid structural condition (missing exterior handle)

    •    Protective case cover

    •    Seat strap

    •    Swab

This is a unique opportunity to acquire a playable bassoon featuring desirable Heckel components at a fraction of the cost of a complete Heckel instrument. It should appeal to players, collectors, and technicians who appreciate vintage German bassoons and recognize the value of the Heckel wing joint and bocal.
