Professionally evaluated before listing. Neck and body date stamps (March 1980) photographed. Original electronics cleaned with DeoxIT. New nut professionally installed. Honest vintage player's condition with attractive finish checking. Please read full description below.
I purchased this bass in 1995 and have owned it for the past 30 years. It is an original pre-Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay dating from March 1980.
Before listing it for sale, I had it professionally inspected and set up by a respected local luthier so I could accurately represent its condition. During the inspection, the neck was removed and photographed, revealing a neck date stamp of MAR 31 1980 and a body cavity date stamp of MAR 19 1980. The control cavity was also photographed, the electronics were cleaned with DeoxIT, and a cracked original nut was replaced with a new professionally installed nut.
Features
- March 1980 neck and body date stamps
- Original pre-Ernie Ball USA Music Man StingRay
- Original 2-band active EQ
- Original electronics (cleaned with DeoxIT)
- Rosewood fingerboard
- Original white finish with natural aging and checking
- New professionally installed nut
Condition
This bass is in very good vintage player's condition with honest cosmetic wear consistent with its age.
The original finish exhibits attractive natural checking throughout, along with scattered dings, chips, and scratches accumulated over more than four decades. I've tried to photograph these accurately.
The recent luthier evaluation noted:
- Electronics functioning properly after cleaning
- Truss rod functions, though somewhat stiff
- Neck exhibits a slight "wave" deformation, with approximately .010" relief differential between the bass and treble sides, but remains fully playable
- Frets have limited remaining life and will eventually require a refret, though they are currently serviceable
I believe in describing vintage instruments as accurately as possible, so I've chosen to include the complete assessment rather than gloss over it. The bass plays well and has served me faithfully for many years.
