Munro MA1 Mastering Monitors Rare find!! 2000 - Blue

One of the very best Mastering monitors ever created by Dynaudio Acoustics co funder Mr Andy Munro.

The speakers are in great working conditions with very minor blemishes

I will also include the custom made Maple speaker stands delivering a perfect tweeter / ear level height of the speaker to a sitting listener position.

Anything I can tell you about these speakers it’s so little compared to how wonderful they are, the only reason why I’m selling them it’s because I have another pair !

Andy Munro’s MA1 mastering monitor, that’s a very different thing from the Dynaudio Acoustics monitors he helped create.

The MA1 was a high-end mastering monitor developed by Andy Munro through Munro Acoustics after his Dynaudio Acoustics period. It was designed specifically for mastering rooms where extremely low coloration, precise imaging, and accurate low-frequency reproduction were the primary goals.

Some notable aspects of the MA1 philosophy:

• Designed as a mastering reference, not primarily as a tracking or mixing monitor.
• Emphasized controlled directivity and room integration, reflecting Munro’s long-held belief that the monitor and the room must be treated as a single system.
• Intended for installation in carefully tuned mastering environments rather than as a general-purpose nearfield.
• Built around the same principles Munro often discussed publicly: flat power response, low distortion, and accurate translation across listening environments.  

What made Andy Munro somewhat unusual among monitor designers is that he was first an acoustician and studio designer, and only secondarily a loudspeaker designer. In interviews and technical discussions, he repeatedly argued that a speaker’s on-axis frequency response alone is not enough; the way the speaker energizes the room is equally important. That philosophy heavily influenced both his work at Dynaudio Acoustics and later Munro Acoustics designs.  

One point of clarification: the MA1 was never produced in the same numbers as famous Dynaudio models such as the Dynaudio Acoustics M3 or M4. It was more of a specialist mastering-room solution and is consequently much less documented publicly.

The pricing of Andy Munro’s MA1 mastering monitor is a bit difficult to pin down because it was a specialist professional product sold largely through studio integrators rather than through normal retail channels.

One contemporary industry source from the late 1990s lists the Munro Associates MA1 as having an MSRP of US$7,950 per speaker. The monitor was described as a three-way active system with dual 9.5-inch woofers, a dome midrange, an Esotar tweeter, and 600 W of onboard amplification.  

That would mean:

• About US$15,900 per stereo pair at list price in the late 1990s.  
• Adjusted for inflation, that is roughly US$30,000–35,000 per pair in today’s money, depending on the inflation measure used.
  

This positioned the MA1 in the same league as top mastering monitors from companies such as:

• ATC
• PMC
• Augspurger
• Dynaudio Acoustics

The MA1 was not intended as a nearfield monitor for project studios; it was a high-end reference system for mastering rooms and premium control rooms. That’s one reason relatively few were produced, and why they are rarely seen on the used market today.
