The TS-808/OD-808 is the original Tube Screamer and one of the most influential overdrive pedals ever made. Its sound became so iconic that the term “TS-style” is now widely used to describe an entire category of overdrive pedals.

Following its introduction in 1979, the Tube Screamer gained worldwide recognition in the early 1980s through Stevie Ray Vaughan's use of the TS-808 and TS9. His legendary Stratocaster tone helped establish the Tube Screamer as the benchmark for blues overdrive, inspiring countless players and cementing its place as one of the defining overdrive circuits in guitar history.

This example is a Japanese-market Maxon OD-808, which shares the same internal circuit as the Ibanez TS-808 except for the DC jack configuration. It features an early black-label serial number beginning with "1," the reddish-brown PCB insulation sheet, a 1980-dated JRC4558D operational amplifier, the desirable 2SK121 FET, and electrolytic capacitors correct for the late-1979 to mid-1980 production period. These specifications identify it as a first-year large-box OD-808 with the early caramel-colored footswitch.

Tonally, the JRC4558D delivers the smooth highs and rich, singing midrange for which it is famous. When used as a booster with the Tone control set higher, it also produces a focused, articulate character reminiscent of the sought-after Malaysian RC4558P. Operationally, the pedal is in excellent condition with no scratchy pots or switch issues, making it a reliable and highly desirable vintage example.
