For your consideration is a 1979 Yamaha PM2000 32x8 Console. This legendary “Japa-Neve” was the result of years of R&D and development at Yamaha coming off the success of the PM1000. There were only 1000 of these made!
Big Tamura transformers and 24V rails, headroom for days! This board sounds awesome and it was outstanding as a tracking centerpiece at my Brooklyn studio.
I acquired this board back in 2019 and it needed quite a bit of work upon arrival. All channels and groups were recapped, power supply was recapped as well.
Various mods were carefully performed on the PM2000 -
- All lamps converted to LED
- 4 of the groups have the JLM Op-Amp kits installed with dual 5532’s for a cleaner summing path option. ()
- On 2 of the groups the Yamaha NE-80200’s have been swapped for JH 990c op-amps for improved specs/different option on summing.
- The EQ by default follows the mic path but I wanted to use the EQ on mixdown (love the EQ on this board!). I had 16 of the 32 channels wired so the eq follow the tape input path rather than mic path - one day wanted to make this a switch instead on all channels.
Current tech notes:
The console hasn’t been in regular use for a few years and will need a little love, as it goes with vintage consoles.
Meter LED’s seem to have gone out - suspect the resistors feeding the LED’s were just too small. Cheap fix but LED’s will need to be replaced.
Some channels have faults, will need some looking at. I recall a few low level channels, maybe some noisy ones.
I glanced at some of the modded channels with JLM kit op-amps recently and it looks like a few got knocked out and some pins were mangled. This is on 2 of the 8 summing group channels so it’s not terribly limiting. The JH990c op amps from these channels are totally fine though and you can move them to any others on the board (including the 32 input modules). They are fantastic op-amps, better spec’d than the Yamaha NE-80200’s.
All in all - an excellent specimen and will bring you much joy as it has brought me. Gentle reminder that it’s a vintage console and will need some teching, but the board is almost entirely discrete and fully serviceable for the capable. Sold as-is, please let me know if there’s a time you’d like to come see it. Comes with an aftermarket heavy-duty stand.
