The Soma Terra is perhaps SOMA Laboratory's most organic creation yet — a fully digital polyphonic, microtonal synthesizer housed within a solid slab of wood, here in the lighter Organic Light finish. Designed by Vlad Kreimer, it continues the legacy of touchable, "organismic" instruments begun by the LYRA-8, but charts entirely new territory. TERRA is digital and contains 32 complex synthesis algorithms. Each algorithm has been carefully designed to be a complete and flexible musical instrument on its own, ready for learning and playing in its own unique way. The goal is to free the musician from long exhausting programming and instead put the focus directly on music and performance — offering the direct intuitive tactile connection of acoustic instruments with the flexibility and versatility of synthesizers.

Key elements of its design:

  • 32 Synthesis Algorithms TERRA has a polyphonic multi-synthesis engine consisting of 32 unique algorithms, divided into four groups: polyphonic, experimental, bass, and solo. The programs range from additive, wavefolding VA, FM, drum synths, and Lo-Fi Casiotone-style synthesis up to physical modeling with plucked, bowed, or hammered acoustic and electro-acoustic instruments.
  • Innovative Touch "Keyboard" Terra's "keyboard" consists of 12 note sensors, alongside four other sensors for pitch shifting and transposition. Through various combinations of note and pitch shifters, the entire range of a grand piano is available — not unlike how a wind player achieves notes through different fingerings.
  • Nanotonal Tuning Terra's keyboard accommodates a full grand piano range and allows for precise tuning of each note with an incredible accuracy of 125 steps per semitone. Different combinations of the pitch-shifting sensors yield 16 variations of keyboard transposing, including shifts of up to three octaves in both directions, plus fifths and fourths.
  • Expressive Sensors & Gyroscope It features 12 dynamic metal note sensors, velocity-sensitive and with aftertouch, 4 dynamic metal sensors for controlling various sound parameters, additional touch sensors for transposing, and a built-in gyroscope for vibrato and further expression possibilities. A three-axis motion sensor lets you create a variety of modulations through simple, intuitive movements of your hands and body.
  • Simple, Instant Interface TERRA has an extremely simple interface that gives you instant access to all its functions in several touches, including saving and loading the 96 presets that are stored directly on the playing sensors.
  • Onboard Stereo Effects An effects section offers a selectable reverb or echo mode, integrated seamlessly into the soundscape.
  • MIDI/MPE & Connectivity As a MIDI controller with MPE support, Terra offers 2x line outputs, a stereo headphone output, MIDI in/out, and a USB-A port for versatile connectivity.

The Terra has captivated reviewers and artists alike. In loopop's in-depth review, host Ziv Eliraz observed that behind the extremely simple interface hides a complex polyphonic, microtonal synthesizer, with a broad and flexible sound palette that ranges from classical beautiful tones to complex atonal noise — concluding it's not the best of a certain regular category, it's its own category. Four Tet has confirmed using the Terra in the creation of his album "Loved."
