Up for sale is a stunning piece of tone history: an original, vintage 1976 Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. Sourced directly from Japan, this is a guaranteed great model from the legendary inaugural era of Boss effects. It remains, in my opinion, simply the best chorus pedal ever created, and it is incredibly fun to play around with. Whether you are using it for electric guitar or keyboards, its lush, organic warmth is unmatched by modern digital emulations.
The Professional Advantage: Premium Analogman Mods
While the original 1970s factory design sounds spectacular, it is notorious for two major flaws: an intensive "tone-suck" when the pedal is disengaged, and a significant volume drop/mismatch when turned on. This unit has been professionally upgraded by Analogman to solve those vintage limitations entirely, making it highly functional for modern rigs:
- True Bypass Mod: Completely isolates the circuit when disengaged, preserving 100% of your guitar’s core high-end clarity and punch.
- Volume/Pot & Depth Mod: Balances out the output levels perfectly when engaged, giving you a smooth, interactive sweep that easily matches your unity gain.
Condition & Visual Breakdown:
- Faceplate & Control Panel: The iconic silver faceplate is exceptionally clean. All lettering, dial indicators, and the classic lowercase "b" Boss logo are crisp and perfectly intact. All three factory control knobs (Level Control, Chorus Intensity, Vibrato Depth/Rate) turn smoothly.
- Chassis: The iconic grey/olive textured enclosure shows normal, light cosmetic edge wear and minor paint chips consistent with its age, giving it a great vintage vibe without any structural issues.
- Hardware & Jacks: The side profile view in shows clean, solid input and stereo output jacks. The two heavy-duty footswitches (Normal/Effect and Chorus/Vibrato) click cleanly, and the power toggle feels rock-solid.
- Underside & Power: The bottom plate features the original, clean Roland Corporation serial label verifying the product number CE-1 and Serial Number 149933 (AC100V, 50Hz/60Hz, 3W). The attached heavy-duty power cord is flexible, structurally sound, and clean. Please note there are neat strips of hook-side velcro attached to the base, making it immediately pedalboard-ready.
