Yairi Guitars, a long-established purely Japanese brand with a factory in Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, is widely known by the brand name K.Yairi and is one of Japan's proud factory brands, favored by many famous artists both domestically and internationally. Within the factory's large grounds is a custom shop where craftsmen with particularly outstanding skills work. Unlike the factory-produced items which are consistently made by a team, the custom shop items are all handmade and possess a different level of appeal than the regular models. Among the craftsmen in this custom shop is Kenji Koike, a master craftsman who has reigned for decades. His custom models bearing the By-Ken model name are the envy of Yairi Guitars fans. This particular instrument is a By KEN custom model made in 2024, featuring a single headstock, cutaway, and a striking cherry sunburst finish. Based on a slightly smaller body size, it features a tightly grained Sitka spruce top, Madagascar rosewood sides and back, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and bridge, pearl and abalone rosette, tortoiseshell cell binding, abalone purfling, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, a 12th fret one-point square, diagonal line inlays, Gotoh gold rotomatic tuners, scalloped X bracing, Venetian cutaway, tortoiseshell pickguard, cherry sunburst finish, and an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup. Some may recognize it at a glance. The single headstock, cutaway, slightly smaller shape, and cherry sunburst coloring evoke the look of instruments used by famous musicians. Contrary to its body size, it has a powerful bass sound, and you can really feel the wide range unique to Madagascar rosewood, all while maintaining a well-balanced sound. Each note has a solid core, yet the high frequencies are beautifully resonant and pleasing to the ear. Even when strumming, it's easy on the ears, yet possesses a powerful quality that makes you want to keep playing. The 43mm nut width and slender V-shaped neck, which fits comfortably in the hand, are perfectly suited to a gripping style. It comes equipped with the L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system from the factory. This system combines a piezo pickup that captures a clear sound image with a microphone that captures the airiness of the body. The microphone mix can be adjusted as needed, making it an excellent system that can be varied according to the situation, from a solid piezo sound to a natural sound with airiness. There are some paint chips visible at the binding seams on the body and end strip, and you can feel a slight step when you touch it, but there is no lifting or peeling and it does not affect playability. There are slight chips on the shoulder area of the 6th string side, near the 6th string side lower bout, on the back in the same area, and along the binding of the cutaway, but these have been repaired with touch-up paint. They have been properly repaired and do not affect playability. There is a white streak on the back of the guitar, near the 6th string side where the neck constricts, but it is only on the surface and does not penetrate. There are signs of fret repair, and small dents on the top (next to the 6th string side of the fingerboard) and on the back of the headstock, but there are no wood cracks or major scratches from use. This is a masterpiece crafted by Master Luthier Koike; don't miss this opportunity! An original hard case is included.
