By the early 1960’s, Martins’s output pretty much catered directly to the folk and rock crowd, having had a number of some of the most famous musicians on the planet be seen with Martin guitars, but as the folk revival kicked off, so did the love of big, loud dreadnoughts, not only for their volume, but also the ability to hold their own at a campfire or song circle.
This D-28, from 1964, is a great example of a mid-60’s dread, still built with the highly sought after Brazilian rosewood. Well into the Sitka spruce period of Martin’s production, this guitar has a nicely even grained top, with no cracks, as well as no cracks on the back and sides. The bridge is most likely original, but the pin holes have been redrilled and the angle changed to widen the spacing at the bridge.
The neck has been reset, and there’s a fair amount of saddle left. The frets are replacements.
There is a fair amount of wear over the whole guitar, including flakes of finish gone, as well as scratches on the side, but it all makes the guitar that much more vibe-y! The tuners are vintage Grovers, that went on to replace a previous set of replacement tuners.
Plays great and sounds huge, a big, precise D-28 tone that sounds much more 50’s than 60’s.
Comes with a replacement case.
