1965 Epiphone F-79 Texan
We found this one-owner gem in Arkansas at an estate sale in need of a little TLC. Nothing scary just some overall love. If you are viewing this posting, you likely already know that the Texans of this era are among the most sought-after acoustics out there. These ‘63-‘66 models have been the go-tos for the likes of Paul McCartney, Peter Frampton and Tom Petty to name just a few. Some of the greatest songs ever written were inspired by these amazing instruments. The spruce top on this gal comes in a relatively rare sunburst. Aged beautifully with an amazing gleam we were able to bring back like new (except for the slight crackle that is only found on a sweet vintage guitar like this). You will note that there was some damage on the upper bout left of the sound hole. It was repaired and cared for well. No structural issues there-just a little character building. The back and sides are stupendous mahogany from the early ‘60’s. The aged look and sound are like no other. There were two well repaired cracks on the back. One at the center seam and one at the upper bout. Both solid and secure. All interior structure is in good condition. We kept all the original parts on the guitar including the tuners. The neck is mahogany and the fretboard is Brazilian rosewood. The frets have plenty of play and the action is setup for comfort. Comes in non-contemporary hardshell case. We have already called out the superlatives of this vintage and model by Epiphone. But we can’t say enough that the craftsmanship is superb and the tone is unmatched. She has a solid and recognizable deep bass response with clear and bright mid to highs. As to projection, this guitar can capture texture at lower playing levels and at the same time is built to project to the back of a large venue--and she does. As a side note, it's cool that you can still find the original sticker inside the sound hole, attesting to year of production and the Kalamazoo origin (quite often missing). We do note she's not a new, pristine guitar, has some well-earned wear and a few repairs--not uncommon for one of over 60 years. But we’ve brought her back to the version of the glory she deserves. If you couldn’t tell, we love these Texans and know that your collection will only be upgraded by adding this one to it.
