The Pioneer RT-707 is one of the most sought-after consumer reel-to-reel decks ever produced. Featuring a three-motor, dual-capstan closed-loop transport, auto-reverse operation, and the unmistakable brushed-aluminum Pioneer styling of the late 1970s, the RT-707 has earned a reputation for reliability, ease of use, and excellent sound quality. It remains a favorite among collectors, audiophiles, and vintage audio enthusiasts alike.

This RT-707 is in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically. It was recently gone through by a professional restorer (cost $260), and all functions operate as they should, including recording and playback.

The work included:

  • new VU meter lights (R&L)
  • adjustment of R&L audio channels

With the case removed, he also performed routine maintenance: the heads were cleaned and demagnetized (they were already remarkably clean), controls and potentiometers were treated, and the deck was carefully inspected throughout.

The heads exhibit very light wear, a strong indication that this deck has not seen excessive use over its lifetime. Anyone familiar with vintage reel-to-reel machines knows that head condition is one of the most important factors in evaluating a deck, and this is one of the cleaner examples I have encountered.

It comes with everything you see in the pictures:

  • RT-707-specific Pioneer take-up reel
  • Maxell 7" reel (pre-recorded, not sure what on it, so - a bonus...)

Unlike many vintage tape decks that spent decades in smoking environments, this unit came from a smoke-free home and is free of the heavy nicotine residue so commonly found on equipment from the era.

Cosmetically, the deck presents extremely well. There are a couple of minor scratches on the top of the wood case (please see photos), but overall it is an excellent example that has clearly been well cared for.

All transport functions work properly, and recording has been tested and verified. Please see the accompanying video demonstration. For the recording test, I connected an iPod to the inputs - bringing a bit of 21st-century technology to a classic 1970s tape deck.

A clean, professionally serviced RT-707 with low-wear heads, ready to be enjoyed rather than restored.

Perhaps you can find it listed elsewhere for less (and I have seen them go for MORE) - but, in my case, you would be getting a thoroughly checked-out and refreshed unit with no stories.

See the feedback; I don't buy items to flip - it's not a source of income for me (especially when you consider the Reverb fees), no matter what IRS would like to think. These are "rescues", something I enjoy doing as a hobby. Considering that parts units sell for 500 clams, this is a solid investment at a good buy-in, if you ask me... I don't sell trash that can be found on other sites.

It will go out well packed and fully insured - through Reverb Safe Shipping (their coverage and customer service is quite good - given the weight, it's not cheap but is WELL WORTH the surety it brings). I have shipped aplenty (and had many shipped to me - so I know what NOT to do). So - this is going to be a sizeable package when all is said and done - I am not making money on shipping.

A standard disclaimer:    While the unit is fully operational to the best of my knowledge, it is being sold "as-described" because some folks here and on other platforms harbor peculiar misapprehensions about how a 40-50 year old piece of vintage electronics should look and function.
