OFFERED HERE IS A REAL GEM. F E OLDS LOS ANGELES .554 / .565 DUAL BASS TROMBONE 10 INCH BELL SINGLE ROTAR 1948 EXCELLANT SHAPE ORG. CASE WITH REMINGTON MPC

Instruments built in the original Los Angeles factory during the mid-1940s are legendary among brass players. Following the manufacturing restrictions of World War II, Olds reopened civilian production with some of the finest craftsmen and highest quality control in the company's history.

... your specific SERIAL number places the horn right around late 1948 or early 1949. It is a spectacular example of the historic "Los Angeles" era before production shifted entirely to Fullerton, California.

What You Have: A Post-War "F-Attachment" Powerhouse In 1948, a single trigger valve on an Olds meant the horn was built with a built-in F-attachment. While modern setups often use two triggers for bass trombones, mid-century masters—most famously jazz legend George Roberts ("Mr. Bass Trombone")—explicitly preferred a single-trigger design. They loved it because removing the second valve kept the horn exceptionally lightweight, nimble, and beautifully resonant.

erformance Characteristics of Your 1948 Horn

  • The "LA" Sound: Because it was built at the original factory in Los Angeles (before the mid-50s move to Fullerton), the brass alloy is highly responsive. It produces a punchy, warm, "smoky" tone that blends beautifully in commercial big bands or jazz ensembles.
  • Tuning-In-Slide (TIS): Check the tuning mechanism. Many 1948 Olds horns did not tune at the main bell crook like modern trombones; instead, the tuning mechanism was built directly into the hand-slide receiver.
  • Providing the 10-inch bell and .554" / .565" dual-bore specifications completely changes the game. Your trombone is a highly rare, legendary 1948 Los Angeles F.E. Olds Bass Trombone. Because it is a true commercial bass trombone from the coveted post-war LA era, its market value jumps significantly. In excellent shape, your instrument will sell for between $1,200 and $2,200+.
  • Realistic Market Pricing Breakdown

Important Detail to Spot on Your SlideTake a close look at the hand slide receiver. Most 1948 Olds bass trombones feature a Tuning-in-Slide (TIS) mechanism. Instead of tuning your horn by pulling out the back bow of the bell section, you adjust your pitch using a small wheel or slide built directly onto the hand-slide grip. ( yes )

  • Specialized Brass Shop Retail: $1,800 to $2,200+. Top-tier specialty retailers like The Brass Exchange or The Brass Ark can command premium pricing for this model. To hit the high end, the original factory finish must be pristine, and the octagonal fluted inner slides must be friction-free.
