Up for sale is an incredible piece of American music history: A gorgeous, turn-of-the-century, 100% complete 1920s Ludwig & Ludwig "Sixteen Thumb-Rod Orchestra Drum."

While you occasionally see bare project shells or stripped parts from this era pop up online, finding a completely intact, unbroken survivor with all its original period-correct hardware is exceptionally rare. This drum is a production-ready acoustic character piece with an unmatchable vintage look and tons of studio mojo.

The Shell & Finish

This drum features a beautiful, vintage wood shell with clean, original interior reinforcement rings and a remarkably sharp, clear, and perfectly preserved "Ludwig & Ludwig, Chicago" factory oval stamp. The exterior features the original factory dark natural wood finish. The shell is structurally excellent—completely round, with no cracks, no extra holes, and absolutely no modern modifications.

The Hardware: The Ultra-Rare 16-Rod Configuration

While standard 1920s parade and street drums typically utilized a basic 6 or 8-rod setup, this premium Orchestra model features a heavy-duty 16-rod single-tension system (employing 32 total nickel-plated claws). This density distributed tension incredibly evenly across the wood hoops.

  • 100% Matching T-Handles: Every single one of the 16 original T-handle thumbscrews is present, matching, and turns smoothly.
  • Original Center Band: The metal center stabilization band is completely intact, holding all 16 rod guide clips perfectly straight.

The Prize: Functional P-338 Strainer & Original Wire Snares

The true miracle of this drum is the snare mechanism. Mounted cleanly to the shell is the legendary, factory-original Ludwig P-338 slider throw-off strainer stamped with its original "PAT. PEND." text. The nickel plating on the strainer is beautifully preserved, the tension adjustment knob turns freely, and the quick-release flip lever functions flawlessly. Opposite the strainer, the original metal butt-plate anchor is securely mounted.

Even more incredible: the drum still retains its original vintage coiled-wire snares, which are laced perfectly into the strainer and butt plate, delivering that authentic, fat, old-school acoustic rattle.

Condition Notes

For a drum that is roughly a century old, the condition is spectacular. The original finish on the wood shell and the hoops shows beautiful, honest, vintage finish checking and light cosmetic character wear that only adds to its historic look. The nickel hardware has a gorgeous, authentic patina. It has been fitted with clean Remo heads and is ready to tune up, display, or track in the studio immediately.

Shipping: This irreplaceable piece of Chicago craftsmanship will be packed with elite care and shipped fully insured with tracking to guarantee it arrives safely at your door.

Don't miss the chance to add this rare, complete piece of 1920s history to your collection or studio arsenal. Buy it now or make a reasonable offer! Listing "as-described" only because this thing is 100+ years old :)
