VINTAGE 1980 IBANEZ PS-10 ICEMAN SIGNATURE MODEL ALL ORIGINAL VERY GOOD CONDITION
VINTAGE 1980 IBANEZ PS -10 ICEMAN SIGNATURE MODEL ALL ORIGINAL VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND CASE CANDY.
BUILT BY FUJIGEN ONE OF JAPAN'S PREMIER GUITAR MANUFACTURERS, THESE ORIGINAL RUN IBANEZ PS 10 PAUL STANLEY SIGNATURE MODELS WERE MADE FROM 1978 THRU 1981, AT A TIME THAT MOST WOULD SAY WAS THE PINNACLE OF THE GOLDEN YEARS OF JAPANESE GUITAR BUILDING AND MANUFACTURERS.
FROM 78 TO 81 NO MORE THAN ABOUT 1500 UNITS WERE PRODUCED IN THAT 4 YEAR SPAN, SO YEARLY PRODUCTION TOTALS ARE VERY LOW. IF YOU'VE NEVER HAD ONE IN YOUR HANDS, I CAN TESTIFY THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE JAPANESE BUILDS YOU WILL EVER FIND. THE DETAIL, COSMETIC APPOINTMENTS, TONALITY, PLAYABILITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP ARE TRULY PHENOMENAL. IBANEZ PULLED OUT ALL THE STOPS, SPARED NO EFFORT OR EXPENSE AND IT’S OBVIOUS ON EVERY LEVEL WHEN YOU PLAY THIS GUITAR.
IM NOT PARTICULARLY A KISS FAN OR A PAUL STANLEY FAN BUT THE REASON I HAD 3 OF THESE AT ONE TIME IS THE OUTSTANDING TONALITY, PLAYABILITY AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. ALL ARE ALL SPECTACULAR. THE OTHER 2 I HAD WERE GREAT BUT THEY WERE ‘PLAYER GUITARS” AS THEY BOTH SUFFERED FROM WHAT A MAJORITY OF THESE ORIGINAL RUN PS 10 ICEMAN MODELS SUFFERED FROM AND THAT IS BINDING ROT. I SOLD THE OTHER 2 AND KEPT THIS ONE AS IT IS EXTREMELY CLEAN AND HAS NO BIDING ROT AT ALL.
THE 1980 AND 1981 MODELS HAD EBONY FRETBOARD VERSUS THE 1978 AND 79 MODELS WHICH HAD ROSEWOOD FINGERBOARD, FURTHER PUSHING THIS GUITARS RARITY AND TONAL CAPABILITY TO GREATER VALUE.
THE GUITAR IS USED AND SHOWS VERY LIGHT SIGNS OF USE. THE FRETS ARE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION WITH LOTS OF LIFE LEFT IN THEM. I BELIEVE I WAS THE FIRST OWNER TO HAVE THEM PROFESSIONALLY DRESSED. THERE ARE SOME LIGHT SUPERFICIAL SCRATCHES AND 2 TINY CHIPS IN THE FINISH. ONE AT THE TOP OF THE BACK OF THE HEADSTOCK AND ONE ON THE BACK SIDE LOWER BOUT NEAR THE CONTROL CAVITY. BOTH ARE PICTURED FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. THE TONE KNOB IS CHIPPED BUT WORKS FINE.
THIS GUITAR WAS MADE IN JAPAN AND ORIGINALLY SOLD IN JAPAN AS EVIDENT BY ITS CASE CANDY PRINTED IN JAPANESE. IT LIVED MOST OF ITS LIFE IN JAPAN UNTIL I BOUGHT IT ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. COMPLETE WITH ITS ORIGINAL CASE THIS GUITAR IS A TRUE RARITY GIVEN ITS ORIGINALITY AND FANTASTIC CONDITION.

Current Market & CollectibilityVintage 1980 models have become increasingly rare and valuable. Depending on the condition and originality of the hardware, these original period pieces typically sell in the $3,000 to $5,000 range on the secondary market.Because original first-generation models are hard to find and their binding can be prone to age damage.
TECHNICAL AND HISTORIC INFORMATION:
If you own an original 1980 Ibanez PS10, you have one of the most desirable vintage Japanese signature guitars ever made.
What makes your 1980 PS10 special?
The PS10 was Paul Stanley’s first signature model and was built by Ibanez at the famed FujiGen factory from 1978–1981. It was based on the Iceman shape that became synonymous with Stanley during the peak KISS years.
Your 1980 model has several features collectors look for:
- Mahogany body with carved maple top
- Set 3-piece maple neck
- Ebony fingerboard (1980–81 only)
- Pearl and abalone split-block inlays
- Chrome mirror pickguard
- Gibraltar bridge with sustain block
- Decorative PS tailpiece ornament
- Half bone / half brass nut
- Original Ibanez V2 open-coil humbuckers (if still stock)
The 1980 ebony-board version
One of the easiest ways to identify a true 1980 PS10 is the fingerboard.
- 1978–1979 models had rosewood boards.
- 1980–1981 models switched to ebony.
Many collectors actually prefer the ebony-board guitars because they have a slightly snappier attack and are less common than the earlier rosewood versions.
How rare is it?
A respected Ibanez historical source, Axeology, reports that 1,526 original PS10s were produced during the entire 1978–1981 run.
Unfortunately, no public factory records break down how many were made in each year. But if that total is accurate, the average would be fewer than 400 per year, and actual yearly production likely varied. That’s why original PS10s don’t show up nearly as often as other vintage Ibanez models.
Value today
Condition matters enormously:
- Original pickups, tuners, tailpiece, pickguard, and finish add significant value.
- A clean, all-original 1980 PS10 is considered a serious collector guitar.
- Modifications (especially routing, refinishes, or replaced hardware) can reduce collector value, though tasteful pickup swaps are common.
