I have a 2019 Paul Reed Smith CE-24 Semi Hollow here, with its factory soft case. This one is in a lovely two tone blue burst color. This is a lightweight specimen coming in at 6lbs 15 ounces.
Conditionally, it looks nice.
The body shows a little bit of guitar pick strumming below the two pickups, but not enough to form a notable sheen. Just a typical amount of light swirling in that area. Any similar traces of superficial swirling will be absolutely minimal anywhere else on the body top. There's no accumulated patterns, just light surface scattered signs of that. There is a little bit of signs of aging on the saddles, which generally happens from palm muting. The overall luster and transparency of the gloss finish looks fantastic throughout on this guitar.
The body sides/edges show a couple small surface indentations that do not break the finish, one on the top and one on the bottom edge, about 1 to 2 mm in size. There is one faint little line shaped ding near the output jack. And around that little line shaped mark is about a centimeter sized light spot in the blue finish. Not a full chip, more so a little bit of clouding, which is the guitar equivalent of a bruise rather than a break. This was touched up slightly with a little bit of color and cleaned so it looks indiscreet.
The body back shows about a handful of small surface indentations. A few of them are thin line shaped surface indentations that do not break the finish. They are shallow surface impressions, pretty minor. I did not find any accumulation of any formed pattern playwear. There's nothing I would quantify as buckle rash or worming patterns, nor any concentration of lower intensity surface swirling type playwear. There are scattered traces of surface swirling, but none building up to form a pattern. Overall, the body back has a very nice clean first look appearance. The noted marks, you have to search for them and scrutinize it to find them.
The neck shaft contour looks and feels excellent, with nothing to report there. Likewise, the headstock is nice and clean. I did not find any chips or dings. The frets are tall and full, showing no pits or divots. The setup, as is often the case with Paul Reed Smith, plays fantastic. The fretwork and the quality control that goes into the neck is fantastic. It plays beautifully with a modern low action. The original electronics are working like they should.
So this one rates either an 8.6 or an 8.7 on the 10 point scale. I found just one mark of note near the output jack, which is a little clouding spot in the finish and a little line shaped ding around that. It's fairly indiscreet. And then there is about a handful of more superficial surface indentation type marks, as mentioned, that are just shallow tiny impressions. I did not find any accumulation of any heavy playwear spots, nor anything that uglies the appearance of the guitar. It's gorgeous. The pictures do it justice. It is structurally and sonically sound and plays and sounds fantastic.
As you know the CE is a bolt on model. It sounds like less of a departure from a well made set neck guitar than most bolt on's that i have heard. If you look at the neck joint it is actually set fairly deep into the guitar body, so it's more of a bolt in then a bolt on guitar. I find that it has the snap and clarity and "fast" tone that you get from a bolt on. But it has that same uninterrupted continuous sustain that characterizes a set neck guitar. A really good bolt on will have that. I have heard this in a Suhr Standard and a Kiesel Aries as well.
The other thing going for this guitar is a solid maple neck shaft. Head to head this is going to have a brighter more aggressive tone then a mahogany neck. Maple necks are less common on PRS's, mostly just seen on the CE's. I think it's actually the best neck wood choice. It has excellent attack, sustain, and dynamics, and it is less prone to the minor warping that occurs to guitars from the weather changes from season to season. Maple is solid and durable.
Next up is the bridge. What you are going to hear from this is the sweet, harmonically rich overtones from proprietary hardware. The Ce-24 Tremolo to my ears sounds a little smoother and not quite as sharp and pingy as the ones used on the core Custom 24's. It has a warm blended easy on the ears harmonically rich tonality.
The semi-hollow aspect of this guitar opens up the tone a bit giving it a bit more bloom and warmth particularly in the mid range. It still has a fairly "solid" body resonance though the guitar is not feather light and does not sound airy or thin. More so just a bit more bloom and open sounding. Not a Huge departure from the solid body version in my opinion.
I feel it's a great all around guitar. Another observation i have had is the PRS pickups here sound outstanding in single coil mode. This is a coil tapped guitar. And many times i will have a guitar where the single coil mode sounds like garbage and it reinforces the stigma that you should either have a humbucker guitar or a true single coil guitar and no in between. The single coil bridge tone here sounds so good it will make a Strat envious. Somehow the ratio of split works, almost like it was designed this way for half of the humbucker to sound completely like a full and independent single coil pickup.
Note that this listing may come down at anytime as I am a multi-platform seller and do sell locally as well in an effort to keep sales fluid. State sales tax will be charged on Reverb sales when applicable, so factor that in to your purchase.
I will immaculately pack it as well. I use quality shipping boxes, ample tape on all sides. And sufficient bubble wrap filler and bracing inside the box. And always Marked/denoted as fragile. I generally detune guitars 1/2 half step prior to shipment as well if needed.
Thank you for reading and considering!
