This two-headed drum is known as gangan by the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. It measures 11" in height and 8 1/2" in diameter.
In addition to its musical function, the drum also can be made to "speak" (that is, to replicate the tones of the Yoruba language), thus its "talking drum" designation. The player holds the drum under an armpit and grips the hide thongs in the hand. While striking one of the drum's heads with both the fingers of one hand and a stick held in the other hand, he alternately squeezes and releases the hide thongs; this action causes the drum heads to tighten and loosen, thus raising and lowering the pitch.
