ULTRA-RARE 1974 YAMAHA FG-2000 Master Craftsmanship Used Acoustic Guitar (made in Japan)

Up for sale is an absolute holy grail of Japanese acoustic guitar history: a 1974 Yamaha FG-2000. Handcrafted by legendary master luthiers (including the inner circle of Terry Nakamoto), this model represents the absolute pinnacle of Yamaha's early 1970s custom shop luxury. It rivals the finest pre-war Martins and boutique modern builders in tone, resonance, and projection.

Key Technical Specifications

  • Top Material: Solid premium Ezo Spruce
  • Back & Sides: Solid Jacaranda (frequently acknowledged by collectors as top-tier Brazilian Rosewood) with a spectacular tiger-grain Maple center wedge on the 3-piece back.
  • Neck Material: One-piece Honduran Mahogany
  • Fingerboard & Bridge: Dark, glassy African Ebony
  • Bracing: Custom low-profile, slender X-bracing
  • Aesthetics: Marquetry wood rosette, diamond fingerboard inlays, tortoiseshell pickguard, and the iconic Yamaha tuning fork headstock inlay

This guitar is a cannon. Thanks to more than 50 years of aging, the Ezo spruce top has opened up beautifully. It delivers a massive, full-bodied jumbo voice featuring prominent, rumbling low-end resonance paired with crystal-clear, chime-like highs. It responds incredibly to the lightest fingerstyle touch yet maintains unmatched sound pressure and clarity when hard-strummed.

The "FG-2000" is a high-end, handcrafted model that debuted in the early 1970s, toward the end of its Red Label era. Its exceptional quality sets it apart from other line-products, and it continues to have a dedicated fan base. It features a Honduran mahogany neck, a rich black ebony fingerboard and bridge, original tuning machines, Jacaranda veneer, tuning fork headstock, original rod cover, original diamond fingerboard inlay, marquetry rosette and trim, an original tortoiseshell pickguard, a gloss top finish, semi-gloss sides and back finishes, and a distinctively slender, low-profile X-bracing top (the early version boasts a fat, full-bodied sound and is highly sought after). The jumbo body delivers impressive volume, rich bass, and solid, clear treble. Even when played hard, it produces a rich, full-bodied tone that maintains its image without collapsing. The guitar produces a sweet, rich tone when played with fingers, while still retaining the lively feel you expect from an FG model. It produces powerful strokes and delicate arpeggios. The neck is in excellent condition, with a slightly lowered neck for excellent playability. This series, built in the midst of Yamaha's period of rapid economic growth, was crafted with meticulous attention to detail, making it an important model in Yamaha's history, as it paved the way for the subsequent Yamaha L Series.
