Personal Thoughts:
The 290 S is one of those guitars that proves you really do not need much to make something special. A single dogear P-90, good wood, great construction and the right wiring is more than enough when it is done to this level. That is exactly why the 290 S is so appealing. The solid Honduran mahogany body and neck, extra long mortise and tenon joint and 50’s wiring all point to a guitar that should feel lively, resonant and incredibly responsive to the controls. I also think the Doghair Black finish suits this model perfectly. It has that slightly raw, stripped-back vintage attitude that works beautifully on a simple singlecut with one P-90. The Lollar dogear is a huge part of the appeal too, because it should cover everything from rich, harmonically detailed cleans through to gritty, saturated drive sounds without ever losing clarity. A very classy Collings and a brilliant example of how good a simple guitar can be when every detail is done properly.
