Yamaha EW-20 Wind Jamm’r — Vintage Electronic Woodwind & FM Sound Module

The Yamaha EW-20 “Wind Jamm’r” is a complete combo system pairing a recorder-style wind controller with a dedicated 4-operator FM sound module  — a genuinely rare and quirky piece of late-80s Yamaha electronic instrument history.

The sound module houses 64 monophonic presets and responds to breath dynamics just like a real acoustic instrument — blowing harder pushes the sound to forte and fortissimo, while softer breath pulls back to piano and pianissimo, with the timbre naturally changing through the dynamic range.  The tone generator also has full MIDI In, Out, and Thru , making it usable as a standalone desktop FM sound module driven by any external MIDI controller or sequencer.

Fingering can be set to saxophone or recorder mode  — a smart design choice that made this approachable for school band students of either background. The wind controller connects to the tone generator via a proprietary cable specific to the EW-20 — not compatible with Yamaha WX series controllers — so verifying the cable is present and functional is essential. 

A legitimately obscure piece of Yamaha history that rarely turns up in working condition. Great for collectors, educators, and anyone curious about the early days of electronic wind instruments.
