Boss TW-1 1979
Super awesome Boss TW-1 Touch Wha from January 1979
These rare Boss pedals are getting harder to find. All original. Fully tested and works as it should with no issues.
The Boss TW-1 Touch Wah (originally labeled as the "Touch Wah" and later the "T-Wah") is a vintage, attack-sensitive envelope filter released by Boss in 1978. Known for its expressive, vocal-like sweeps and classic funk/fusion tones, it features a unique photocoupler design that delivers a fluid response and warm, musical tone.
Key Features & Controls
- Sens (Sensitivity): Adjusts how the pedal responds to your picking dynamics. Turning it clockwise opens the filter even with soft picking, while counter-clockwise requires heavy, hard strikes to activate the wah.
- Peak: Controls the tonal depth or width of the frequency sweep. Turning it clockwise makes the effect deeper and more pronounced.
- Drive Switch: Determines the direction of the filter sweep.
- UP: Sweeps from a hard (bright) to mellow (dark) tone.
- DOWN: Sweeps from mellow to a hard tone.
Versions & Evolution
- Original Nomenclature: Earliest models (1978–1981) were named "Touch Wah". Around 1981, it was renamed "T Wah".
- LED Behavior: Early iterations featured a "momentary" light that only flashed when clicked on/off, while later models had permanently illuminated LEDs.
- Power Requirements: Being an older Boss pedal, early TW-1s require a 12V DC power supply (typically requiring a vintage Boss ACA adapter) or a standard 9V battery. Daisy-chaining with modern 9V pedals can cause the LED to dim without an isolated or proper vintage power source.
- End of Production: The TW-1 was discontinued in 1991, replaced by the Boss AW-2 Auto Wah.
Use & Tone Tips
- While primarily built for guitar, it works wonderfully with bass (though it can thin out the extreme low end slightly) and electric pianos.
- It sounds incredibly dynamic when placed before a mild overdrive pedal for biting, articulate lead solos.
