The Telecaster is one of the most iconic guitars in rock history, with a design that has remained virtually unchanged over the past 70 years since its introduction in 1950. That’s quite a long time… Fender thought so too, and with this Fender AM Ultra Tele, they’ve managed to build a completely modern guitar under the guise of a no-frills Telecaster. The Fender Ultra Tele therefore looks like... well, exactly what a Tele is supposed to look like. Perhaps a bit more luxurious with its sparkling Mocha Burst finish and cream-colored body bindings. But it feels completely different, so even a young guitarist accustomed to high-tech gear will feel right at home on it.

Like the classic vintage Teles of the 1950s, this guitar features a solid alder body with a maple neck and fingerboard. But it starts with the body itself, as the back features an ergonomic contour for the belly, allowing the guitar to nestle snugly against the body’s shape. But it’s the neck that really stands out: it’s slightly wider than usual right at the nut. Added to this is a so-called compound radius on the fretboard—10” at the nut, 14” at the 22nd fret—combined with a “Modern D” neck profile, so your hand feels instantly comfortable at every single point. To ensure every note is in tune, a bridge with six individually adjustable saddles has been installed.

The two pickups are Ultra Noiseless Tele-type pickups that are completely free of the typical single-coil hum. And finally, there’s the S1 switch in the volume pot. This connects the two pickups in series as soon as the middle position is selected on the three-way switch.

There are many Telecaster fans who are drawn to its grounded design. If only it were a bit more comfortable to play. And less background noise wouldn’t be bad either… the Ultra Tele offers all of that.
