Pico Dexed — Compact 6-Operator FM Synthesizer (DX7-Compatible)

Simplified, compact hardware FM synthesizer based on the open-source MiniDexed project. Built around a Raspberry Pi Pico in a custom 3D-printed enclosure — small footprint, instant power-on, no boot waiting.

Sound & specs

• 6-operator FM synthesis — classic vintage FM architecture
• 8 banks × 32 patches — 256 sounds total, covering all the iconic FM tones (electric pianos, basses, brass, bells, pads, leads)
• True 8-voice polyphony (no voice stealing on 8 simultaneous notes)
• Hardware DSP path delivers the bite and presence of classic FM hardware
• All patch names displayed on the onboard screen

MIDI implementation

• Full MIDI input via standard 5-pin DIN
• MIDI-over-USB on the side — connect directly to a computer to send MIDI from your DAW
• Patch and bank switching via MIDI or front-panel encoder
• Pitch Bend — works correctly
• Modulation wheel — works correctly
• Aftertouch — fully supported

Open source

MiniDexed is a well-documented open-source FM synthesis project. Thousands of free DX7-format SysEx banks and editor software (Dexed, free) are widely available online — you can design your own patches on a computer and load them via MIDI.
