Gibson EB2 1966 - Cherry
This instrument is a beautiful vintage Gibson EB-2 Semi-Hollow Electric Bass in a Cherry Red finish.
This Bass is absolutely built in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
During the 1960s, Gibson operated exclusively out of its legendary historic factory at 225 Parsons Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Production did not begin moving to Nashville until the mid-1970s. Every bit of this bass—from the carved top to the hand-applied nitrocellulose lacquer—came directly from the Kalamazoo craftsmen.
The serial number clearly stamped into the wood on the back of the headstock in is 830638.
The Serial Number Dating: Gibson's 1960s serialization system famously overlapped, but numbers in the 830000–830999 bracket pinpoint production to 1966 or 1967.
Also look at the lower horn area. The small plastic toggle switch you see is the "Baritone Switch" (often called the choke or mud-switch). The classic "Witch Hat" control knobs (resembling amplifier knobs) shown in photos were introduced by Gibson right around late 1966/1967. Gibson went on a complete hiatus and did not even manufacture the EB-2 model in 1963.
The Headstock Crack; There is a highly visible, substantial vertical stress crack running from the top edge of the headstock down through the wood between the tuners. If this crack goes all the way through or flexes under string tension, it requires a professional luthier repair to stabilize it.
Finish: The body shows beautiful, authentic finish checking (weather checking) and playwear in the nitro lacquer, which vintage collectors love. Body has faded wash marks on the bottom right side.
The Bridge and String Mute: It retains its original chrome-plated combo bridge complete with the under-bridge yellow felt string-mute assembly. It is very common for these mutes to be missing, so having it intact is a great vintage plus.
It is an incredibly iconic, thunderous-sounding Kalamazoo classic.
