The Electro-Voice 655C is a legendary, vintage slim-trim omnidirectional dynamic microphone produced by Electro-Voice from the 1950s through the early 1980s. Engineered primarily for high-quality TV, AM, and FM broadcasting, its unique one-inch slim form factor and flat frequency response allowed it to capture natural, uncolored room acoustics. It was famously used by icons like Frank Sinatra during his 1962 world tour, Dick Clark on American Bandstand, and even The Beatles in live performance contexts. 

Key Specifications & Design

• Polar Pattern: Omnidirectional. Because of its narrow 1-inch diameter, it maintains a highly consistent omni pickup angle, though it naturally becomes slightly more directional at ultra-high frequencies.
• Frequency Response: Remarkably wide and uniform for its era, spanning from 40 to 20,000 cps (Hz).
• Proximity Effect: None. Because it is a pressure-operated omnidirectional mic, vocals stay perfectly clear and natural without any low-end muddy buildup as you get closer to the grille.
• Selectable Impedance: Internal wiring links can be swapped to switch between 50, 150, and 250 ohms.
• Build: High-tensile aluminum body weighing just 7 ounces. Most versions featured a non-reflective olive-drab or matte gray finish to avoid throwing glare under bright studio television lights.
• Connector: Uses a vintage Cannon UA-3-11 socket (UA-3-12 connector), which requires a specialized vintage cable or an aftermarket UA-to-XLR adapter to connect to modern gear. 

Aesthetic Generations

• 1st Generation (1950s): Features a very prominent, rounded dome-shaped front grille tip.
• 2nd Generation (1960s–1980s): Electro-Voice switched to a safer, flatter mesh surface grille to minimize accidental damage or dental hazards during close vocal use.
