Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a unique & obscure high quality 1980's era Realistic "Highball" 33-983 model dynamic cardioid microphone with an all metal body and polished chrome grill that closely resembled the classic American made Shure SM-58 model mic from that era. This mic comes with an original Shure A-25 mic clip, mic cable and hard to find original box in which to store.

This is basically a rebadged Shure SM model mic.

This microphone was one of the very best that Realistic sold. It was a collaboration between Radio Shack and Shure Brothers. The Highball actually uses the same cartridge as the Shure SM-58 so what you're getting here is the American made Shure SM58 that was just rebadged as a Realistic / Radio Shack mic. The tone and response on this mic is just as good as the original and it's quite strong. No difference. You'll see the element in pic # 11.

You'll even see in pic # 12 that it came with the Shure 3 pin cable connection.

The body of this mic looked familiar but I couldn't place it and now I understand that Realistic utilized the Shure 588SA for this Highball. The Shure 588SA had a satin chrome body and the same front grill but Realistic had Shure Brothers paint the handle the same color as the Shure SM58.

That being said this Highball is set to Hi Z. The mic itself dual Z but was wired internally to be Hi Z. The SM58 and Highball is usually Low Z unless wired on the inside to be Hi Z which I have seen many times over the years. If you use a standard XLR cable with this mic the mic won't work. You'll need to use the cable provided to operate the mic because the mic again, wired for Hi Z currently.

It works perfectly and can be used for recording, singing or general broadcasting purposes as it was designed. It's uni-directional in nature so it's polar pattern tends to pick up very little background noise.

I'm not sure what the OHMS rating is in the Hi Z mode but I can tell you that the mic sounds very much like a Shure 565SD. The mic is very bright in nature with just a touch of bass. A very pleasant tone from this Highball. The on / off switch on the mic works perfectly.

This mic was made in America. I don't know how many years Radio Shack sold the Highball in this particular model but it wasn't many. Maybe 5 or 10 years tops. It would have been one of their finest models and on the expensive side. It's built like a tank.

This microphone has a classic mid century, modern design and is quite handsome with typical wear from years of handling. Some paint loss but otherwise the mic is quite good looking. It comes with the original paint scheme. The mic has been thoroughly cleaned as have the XLR pins. The inner foam under the chrome globe is new as the original was falling apart. I usually have to replace them.

 I'd rate the mic a true 7 on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking.

The mic comes with the original Shure A-25 mic clip that has lite wear but works perfectly. It grips the mic firmly and will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have. All of these Highball models were sold with Shure A-25 model clips.

Mic takes a standard XLR cable which is included. It's appx 20 feet long. Soft, pliable and free of damage. Works perfectly and has the detachable Switchcraft male 1/4 inch end connector for use with most audio equipment. Again, you need to use this specific cable to operate the mic as the XLR connector is wired specifically for this Hi Z mic. This mic is ready to go.

If you want an American made Hi Z SM58 that's a slightly more exotic variant that few people have or know of...the Highball will do the trick. Cheers!
