Vintage AIWA DM-54 dynamic microphone made in Japan in the mid-1960s. Originally bundled with portable tape recorders, the DM-54 has the kind of compact utilitarian design that makes old Japanese consumer audio gear so appealing now — minimal, functional and oddly futuristic.
Despite being a relatively simple microphone, these old AIWA dynamics have a surprisingly usable character: narrow midrange focus, softened top end and a naturally compressed sound that works great for lo-fi vocals, guitar amps, harmonica, tape experiments, spoken word and sampling.
This example has been converted to XLR for proper studio/live compatibility without adapters or proprietary vintage connectors.
