A small passive switch that sits between your source and amplifier. One toggle flips your stereo signal into properly summed mono. Flip it back and the signal passes through completely unchanged.
No power required, nothing added to the path, no coloration, no noise.
Most preamps, amplifiers, and turntables don't have a mono switch built in. Swapping cartridges is a project. A second turntable can be expensive. Y-cables are a compromise.
The MonoBox is the straightforward answer: One toggle, instant A/B, no rewiring.
Where it goes
Turntable → Phono Preamp → MonoBox → Amplifier
Works with any RCA line-level source. Place it after your phono preamp so the signal is properly amplified and EQ'd before summing. One additional pair of RCA cables required.
Why not a Y-cable?
A Y-adapter shorts your left and right outputs directly together, forcing the channels to push against each other. Depending on your gear that means distortion, imbalance, and stress on your output stage over time. The MonoBox sums through precision 2.2kΩ resistors, the same method used in professional mixing consoles. Each channel drives the destination cleanly.
Common questions
Will this affect my sound in stereo mode? No. Stereo is true bypass. Fully passive, so nothing is added.
What if I have a main preamp in the chain? Place it after your phono preamp and before your main preamp:
Turntable → Phono Preamp → MonoBox → Main Preamp → Amplifier
Any volume change when switching to mono? A small drop of around 6dB is normal when summing two channels. A small turn of the volume knob takes care of it.
Will it harm my equipment? No. The resistors keep the channels electrically isolated from one another. This is the correct summing method and the same one used in professional gear.
